Duke of Kent Visits Oxford DiffractionOn the 31st of October, the Duke of Kent visited Oxford Diffraction to present the company with the 2006 Queen's Award for International Trade for increasing its international exports over three years by more than 150 per cent. The award, which is symbolised by an engraved cut-glass bowl, was presented to the CEO of Oxford Diffraction, Dr Paul Loeffen, by His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent and Hugo Brunner, the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, at the company headquarters on Milton Park. Dr Loeffen said: “As a new start up company from small beginnings we have grown into a mature successful business and to get this sort of recognition is a very nice feeling. We have noticed that with investors it certainly does help to build on our reputation. “The company was five years old in March this year and we threw a big party to celebrate. At around the same time, we were told about the Queen’s Award which was another feel good factor. “The Duke is very interested in technology so it was an excellent opportunity for us to show him what we do.” This is the first time the company, which has 70 staff in total and 15 on Milton Park, has received such an accolade. The announcement was made on the same day as the Queen’s 80th birthday in April and Dr Loeffen and his colleagues, Customer Support Group Manager David Warner and Office and HR Assistant Carol Lloyd met the Queen and Prince Philip at Buckingham Palace in July. Dr Loeffen said: “We enjoyed it tremendously. We were literally the first, second and third person in the line up. It was out of the ordinary and a great morale boost for everybody.” Oxford Diffraction began trading in 2001 after a successful alliance between Oxford Instruments and Kuma Diffraction, a company based in Wroclaw, Poland. It has regional offices in Europe, North America and Asia. The Queen’s Awards promote British enterprise as a force for good in the world. They are Government funded and organised by the Department of Trade and Industry and celebrated their 40th anniversary last year.
